Dr. Nadine Wong: An enhancer of individual natural inner and outer beauty

Dr. Nadine Wong

Many of us have experienced clinging our glasses or bottles in toasting for happy times and good health. However, some of us have yet to rejoice in happiness to the health of our hair. Well, Dr. Nadine Wong has been constantly trying to make it more customary.

Dr. Nadine Wong is an immigrant from Jamaica who has lived in Canada for over 20 years. She is the Chief Executive Officer of Alabaster Wellness Clinic, founder of Alabaster Gate Children’s Charity, creator of Alabaster Beauty Ointment Products. She has authored What If Your Hair Could Speak, What Would it Say and Let’s Talk About Sex in My Christian Bed, and is currently working on her third book, Your Hair and Your Health.

Dr. Wong has always been curious about human anatomy and physiology. After obtaining certificates from Centennial College in Psychology and Interpersonal Group Skills, she attended Marvel Beauty School where she obtained a diploma in Hairdressing and certification in Black Hair Dressing. She furthered her studies in Cosmetology and advance studies in Ethnic Hair at Dudley University, North Carolina. Dr. Wong obtained her Doctorate in Cosmetology from the Dillard University and another Doctorate in Trichology from The International Institute of Trichology, Huntsville, Alabama (board certified with the American Drugless Association).

Her academic journey came full circle at the California State Christian University where she majored in Psychotherapy and she obtained her General Practice Psychotherapist (GPP) and Clinical Psychotherapy accreditations. She also earned a Ph.D. in Integrative Medicine from the World Organization of Natural Medicine. Presently, she is completing studies in Pharmacology and Food Science at Durham College.

Dr. Wong is a member of The World Organization of Natural Medicine (www.wonm.org), and The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.  She sits on The Board of Integrative Medicine (www.boim.org), The Board of Natural Medicine Doctors and Practitioners-North America, and The Board of Natural Medicine (www.boardofnaturalmedicine.org), In addition to her practice, Dr. Wong is an in-demand motivational speaker.

Among her various awards are the 2017 Black Business Awards, the 2013 Harry Jerome Health Science Award, the Breakfast Club Award, also the 2003 Achievement Award, 2002 Trichology Student of the Year, and the 2001 Pioneer Award.

Dr. Wong is a dynamic professional who is focused on teaching people about harnessing health, life, and vitality. Having started in cosmetology, Dr. Wong, in working intimately with women, observed the natural tendency to endure stresses as best as possible by going for that ‘cosmetic extra’ or ‘well made-up face’ that says to the world “I’m doing okay.”  In her own words; “I am a visual person, so I would sometimes sit and watch women walking into a beauty salon and they would come in with one mood and leave in another mood.”

In a recent interview, Dr. Wong commented on her interest in making dolls out of mango seeds in her backyard while living in Kingston, Jamaica. She shared how she would “meticulously dye each seed a different colour using Kool-Aid, and hosted her own ‘mango beauty pageant.’ After migrating to Toronto, Canada she was encouraged by her father to create a path into the study of hair. So she enrolled at Marvel Beauty School in Toronto. She was determined to learn as much as she could about different hair (black, white, other) and to understand the dynamics involved.

About Alabaster Wellness Clinic

Alabaster Wellness Clinic was founded by Dr. Nadine Wong. Her personal aspiration is to unlock the harmony of individuals’ mind through education based on complete wellness involving the mind, body, and spirit.

The mineral composition of our hair speaks to our health and the unique approach of Alabaster Wellness Clinic is centered on the use of natural based products thereby limiting synthetic based stressors from entering our system.

At the Alabaster Wellness Clinic, the focus is placed on an individualized quality care system by developing a one-of-a-kind approach toward holistic health. This is achieved, based on the information gathered from a hair mineral analysis.  As Dr. Wong puts it, “The minerals are the spark plugs to balance cognitive and reactive abilities.”

It is a commonly known fact that the factors that affect hair growth and hair loss include age, health, diet, hormones, seasonal changes, and climate. Trauma, stress, and anxiety also affect growth, because they reduce the blood and oxygen supply to the scalp, which is essential to healthy hair. So, with this in mind, Dr. Wong, in her work as a trichologist —trichology is the branch of dermatology that deals with the scientific study of the health of hair and scalp—has applied techniques which deal with stress management and mental health by viewing the body minerals through mineral analysis.

She says, “The body system will absorb a great percentage of cosmetic and environmental elements; therefore, the cycle of inside-outside are influenced greatly from inside.” She also stated, “The methodology is not to assume, but let the client’s hair minerals sample offer the information that perhaps is not obvious from outwards.”

The treatment regime at Alabaster Wellness Centre is focused on Naturopathy Wellness which goes to the deep cellular level and works to rebalance our stress-induced reactive imbalances. The rebalancing tools are those of nutrition, essential oils, and herbs.

Dr. Wong, appreciating the need to calm our minds even while working through the mineral information from our hairs, qualified as a psychotherapist. So, as the mineral analysis breaks down the mineral requirements, the psychotherapy is integrated to work in wellness sessions that “break down into one’s mind.” Alabaster Wellness Clinic is especially known for its coaching and mentoring of individuals who have suffered abuse, and those battling inferiority issues; in which case personal grooming and body posture among other things are also worked in, and for those simply needing to improve coping skills.

Simply stated, Dr. Wong says, “The Clinic is here to educate people based on the individual report; first through education on individuality, and secondly to bring about the total concept of mind and body wellness using alternative medicine, and psychoanalytical self-discovery. A mineral treatment is prescribed after mineral analysis, and then a customized programme is implemented.”

Self-Discovery is not just something Dr. Wong appreciates professionally, but also personally.

Dr. Wong thinks that the practice of Trichology has made monumental strides in the last five years. She noted that “It was a challenge being one of the few practitioners who offered hair and wellness, not cosmetic and cosmology services.” Therefore, we might soon be putting our hairs together for that “hairs to health” cheer since the appreciation is still evolving.

In the YouTube series What if your hair could speak? Dr. Wong provides information to further the understanding of trichology.

The evolution though is beyond trichology and extends to the idea of wellness and we can always better our wellness. Therefore, anyone can get a wellness checkup by visiting Alabaster Wellness Clinic to get that guide for changes to better support our wellbeing.

Dr. Wong aspires to enhance the harmony of an individual’s mind through education based on the complete wellness of the mind, body, and spirit. In 2010, she founded the Alabaster Gate Children’s Charity. Dr. Wong believes that every child deserves a good quality education and should develop vital life skills. She also believes that each child should have the freedom to focus on the lessons being taught in school, and not become distracted with concerns of a hot meal or finances to obtain the necessary school items. The charity has grown and now includes The International Skype Education Project.

How then might we perceive what Dr. Nadine Wong is about?

What else, but an enhancer of individual natural inner and outer beauty, and the Alabaster Gates Children’s Charity is surely another way in which humanitarian service opens the doors and opportunities for the inner beauty and potentialities of the young to shine through.
